Families at Summer School

The Summer School formula makes for a perfect family holiday, where parents can choose their own courses and entertainment knowing that the children are blissfully happy, but never far away. Families can enjoy as much or as little independence as they choose but, above all, no one has to be restricted by what the others want to do. It is the blend of young and old that makes the atmosphere at Summer School so vibrant and all encompassing. Evenings can be spent together or, if preferred, taking part in the numerous entertainments on offer. Summer School is about being independent together, where the problems of pleasing all the family are sorted out for you.

Young people and children

The young peoples programme, aged 13 to 17 years old, includes a rich variety of courses across a broad range of pursuits. The majority of courses are designed to offer young people experiences that they may not easily find as part of their school curriculum or extra-curricular activities. The exciting programme makes full use of the magnificent campus, which boasts excellent indoor and outdoor facilities, while some selected courses are scheduled off campus in the surrounding area.

Four age bands allow parents the maximum choice for their children. Full details of Young Peoples Activities can be found by clicking on this link.

During the week, Teenagers and Young Adventurers (9-17 years old) can also enjoy a supervised evening programme from 5.00pm. During this time we will be offering a wide choice of activities which may include outdoor adventures, treasure hunt, swimming inflatables, waterslide, Capture the Flag, Jailbreak, Gold Rush, art & crafts and more.

Residential children can enjoy all entertainments free of charge. For non-residents, there will be a daily charge of £6 (Monday to Friday), payable daily or in advance for the week to the Team Leader.

Overseas visitors

The Summer School affords a warm and friendly welcome to many overseas visitors. Lasting friendships between children and adults of different nationalities are made each year; whilst the opportunity to improve their command of the English language arises from mixing and mingling with English friends and acquaintances. Once again, English language courses for adults and young people will be offered during the mornings for those who wish to advance their skills with more intensive study. English language courses use audio-visual and computer technology as teaching aids to ensure rapid progress with the students' language skills.

Staying at Summer School

The accommodation price includes full board for six nights, as well as attendance at any of the afternoon lectures, recitals and entertainments including the Friday Gala Performance. The residential week begins on Sunday evening before dinner and finishes the following Saturday after breakfast. Comfortable accommodation may be selected from single, twin-bedded or family rooms in the College. The College houses are modern and purpose-built or recently refurbished and fully equipped with kitchenettes, meeting areas, TV and games rooms. There is no facility to accommodate residential young people under the age of 18 years old without a parent or guardian staying with them. Summer School guests wishing to stay in outside accommodation should visit http://www.visitwiltshire.co.uk or contact the Summer School office for more information.

Eating at Summer School

There is excellent dining at Summer School and non-residents may purchase meal tickets on a daily or weekly basis. The marquee extension to the main Norwood Hall restaurant creates a perfect atmosphere for dining in the open air on a warm summer evening. In addition, customers may visit our 'Café in the Court' which offers a wide range of sandwiches, panini, baguettes, soups and other lunchtime snacks. For customer convenience, orders can be placed at morning break.

Entertainment

We are delighted to present our showcase entertainment guide for Summer School. Each Headliner starts at 8pm unless otherwise stated and is ticket only, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Also available throughout the week is an excellent series of evening lectures and recitals. Tickets are not required for these events (except the Headliners which must be booked in advance) but Summer School customers will be required to show their ID card on entry. These high quality events are open to the public and there will be a small charge on the door for visitors who are not signed up for courses in that week.

Some additional evening 'tasters' are available throughout the week, and can be booked through the Summer School office on a first come, first served basis. These may include an early evening downland walk for those who have the energy, bridge evenings and clayshooting. We also offer a quiz night and live music - or you can simply just relax in the quieter corners of the College.

The Summer School bar is situated in the Marquee for refreshments at lunchtime and during the evening. The venue is an ideal place to meet friends, have a drink and discuss your day, while enjoying the wide variety of entertainments on offer each day.

The College facilities are available to all members of Summer School when not being used for courses. Superb sporting facilities include an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, an athletics track, and much more.
