Ukulele: The Next Stage

183 TUTOR: Richard Bending

The course will be ideal for students who have previously attended the 'Ukulele For Beginners' courses in previous years, and anyone who can already play and strum a few chords, and is now wanting to learn more. No knowledge of music notation is required. In a friendly, relaxed atmosphere we will work on different strumming patterns and picking styles, including arpeggio playing. As well as having some enjoyable play-along sessions, you'll learn a few songs and instrumentals - with different people playing the various parts, to create pleasing 'harmonic' arrangements. We'll also discuss how to approach songwriting, and have a go at composing a song from scratch… We'll transpose songs to different keys, and you'll learn how and when to include a few extra chords (diminished, augmented, etc.) to add interest and colour to your playing. Bring your ukulele, learn a little - and have fun!

Course Notes

The course will be ideal for students who have attended the ukulele courses in previous years and anyone who can play and strum a few chords, and is now wanting to learn more.

No knowledge of music notation is required, but some of the time we will be using Tablature. This is a simple system with four horizontal lines representing the four strings of the ukulele, with the first string (A) at the top, and the fourth string (G) at the bottom.

In a friendly, relaxed atmosphere we will work on strumming patterns and picking styles, including arpeggio playing. As well as having some enjoyable play-along sessions, we'll concentrate on a few songs and instrumentals - with different people playing the various parts, to create pleasing 'orchestral' arrangements. We may even have a go at composing our own new song from scratch.

We will discuss transposing songs to different keys and how to add interest by using unusual chords.

If you would like to, there may be an opportunity for the group to publicly perform a couple of numbers in the bar area on the Friday.

Notes and music stands will be provided, so you just need to bring a ukulele.

Develop your skills, and have fun!
