Basket Making with Willow

448 TUTOR: Jane Welsh

In this workshop you can have a go at working with willow to make a round basket. We will explore this creative traditional craft and work with a variety of different naturally coloured willows to make a beautiful and useful basket, with or without a handle.

Course Notes

Make a useful and beautiful basket from natural willow. We will start by making round bases and then learn different weaves as we work up the sides. You can then add a handle if you choose. Baskets are very useful and can be used for many jobs including keeping your favourite things in, gathering, shopping, serving food and of course collecting conkers and Easter eggs!

There will be different types of naturally coloured willow from which to make your beautiful, sustainable and unique basket.

About Jane

Jane has been basket making for 23 years and has been working professionally and running courses for the last 14 years. She feels ardently about protecting the knowledge of our traditional rural crafts that are so much a part of our heritage she likes to get people enthused to work with willow and rush, these versatile, sustainable materials.

Her background is in arts and crafts. Having studied art, design and furniture making, worked in traditional timber framing and dabbled in stone masonry and stained glass, she then became hooked on basket making, mainly learning from the much respected Gloucestershire basket maker Sheila Wynter.
