Sketching

443 TUTOR: Martina Cobbson

This mixed media art course will give you the opportunity to paint, draw, create collages and prints and give you an understanding of the basic elements of art. You will be encouraged to use a sketchbook as a visual diary, use different materials such as paints, charcoal, pastels and inks and discover different styles and techniques. The wide range of projects will be structured, but at the same time give you the freedom to generate your own ideas and develop them in your own direction. This course is inspiring for anyone who wants to develop his or her art skills.

Course Notes

Day 1: Letterform

You will uniquely design front page and first page of your creative sketchbook. You will

concentrate on the form of letters. Thick and thin strokes can create textures, patterns and rhythms. You will explore contract, shape, size and colour and become familiar with carious letterforms that can have their own personalities. You will use pencil, markers, watercolours and ink.

Day 2: Sketching

Depict reality with simply using lines and tones. Use of perspective and simple introduction of how to sketch structures and different forms, showing scale and casting shadows. You will use pencils, oil pastels, soft pastels and charcoal.

Day 3: Collage

Make a collage by choosing all kind of materials, photographs, found objects, magazines.

and paint. You will create mixed media art that will make you think like an artist and designer. You will express yourself with your way of using composition, colour, texture and shape.

Day 4: Printmaking

Make a print that you can use for a card or as a part of a mixed media piece of art. You can use lino cut or poly card and ink for printing.

Day 5: Painting, Drawing, Mixed Media

Choose one of the projects that you enjoyed most for the last few days and develop it.

Martina Cobbson

About Martina

Mixed media artist, architect technician and teacher Martina, has positive, enthusiastic way of approaching art and expresses this in all her projects. She inspires all her groups to appreciate and enjoy being creative. Martina studied at 'Beaux Arts' in Paris (1994), exhibiting at Kensington and Chelsea College in London where she got BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design (1996) and while working for London architects and as a piano teacher she also achieved 'BA (Hons) Degree in 'Mixed Media Art' (2000) at the University of Westminster in London.

Studying psychology and art therapy after her art degree, Martina uses art as a therapeutic and very important medium to discover, express, understand and inspire one's inner self and the surrounding world. Since 2000, Martina has been organising art and music workshops and exhibitions, teaching foundation courses for Adult Education in London, running mother and toddler therapeutic sessions, preparing relaxing art projects for people with mental health issues, running children and adult art summer schools in UK and around Europe, set up courses for home educated students in Wiltshire, and other art and mixed media activities.
