Switching Off Automatic

270 TUTOR: Brian Anderson

This course is aimed at keen hobby photographers with advanced point and shoot compact or SLR cameras who wish to get off Auto Mode and use their camera's exposure triangle of aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings. The course will also look at histograms, focus modes, depth of field plus much more. Please note that this course is only suitable for cameras with manual control of shutter, aperture and ISO.

Course Notes

This course is aimed at those who enjoy taking photographs but want to get off their camera's 'auto' mode and better understand its various controls and functions. The range of controls/functions can be overwhelming at first.

To begin we will look at your camera's three key controls; aperture, shutter speed and ISO. We will then investigate the effects that can be achieved by changing these control settings, including; Depth of Field (DoF), Bokeh and more. We will also look at different types of lenses (wide angle, telephoto, etc) and their effect on the type of shots we can take.

Course theory and techniques will be well illustrated by examples of the tutor's images from his travels. Each day we have a group photo session to practise the theory around the College grounds and town.

You will submit your Top Five shots taken to the tutor at the end of the day and the images will be reviewed within the group on the next session.

To get maximum benefit from course, participants must be familiar with and able to operate their basic DSLR camera controls.

Please bring your own camera equipment (inc lenses, spare battery, charger), notebook, pens, laptop if you need one.
