This course is aimed at those who enjoy taking photographs and can operate their digital cameras, iPads or smartphones but want to improve the compositional balance and impact of their images. During this course, you will learn how to create pleasing, striking and well-composed images. You will look at the six key elements of a successful image, practical tips and compositional techniques such as balance and the rule of thirds, cropping, silhouette effects, visual juxtaposition and the use of colour and monochrome.

This course is aimed at those who enjoy taking photographs and can operate their digital cameras, iPads or smartphones, but who want to improve the compositional balance and impact of their images.

 

You will learn how to create pleasing, striking and well-composed images. We look at the Six Key Elements of a successful image; practical tips and compositional techniques such as Balance and the Rule of Thirds; Cropping, Silhouette Effects and Visual Juxtaposition and the use of Colour and Monochrome.

 

The course theory and techniques will be well illustrated by examples of the tutor's images from his travels. Each day we have a group session to practice the theory around the college grounds and town. On day 4 we have a trip to Avebury, White Horse and Long Barrow sites.

 

You will submit to the tutor your top five shots and the images will be reviewed within the group on the next session.

 

To get maximum benefit from the course, participants must be familiar with, and able to, operate their basic camera/iPad/Smartphone controls.

 

Please bring your own camera equipment, notebook, pens and laptop if you need one.

About Brian

Photographer, architect, educator and adventurer based in Wirral, Merseyside. Brian has over 30 years' experience capturing travel, landscape and wildlife images from 55+ countries and territories on 4 continents, and even further afield to wilderness regions including Galápagos, the geographic North Pole, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and the Antarctic peninsula. Brian has been presenting illustrated talks on his trips since 1998. He runs courses on Photography and lectures to schools, adult colleges & universities on a range of topics and themes. His images and articles appear regularly in brochures, foreign websites and in UK photographic journals. Brian has also been running courses and presenting lectures at Marlborough College Summer School since 2015.
