Folk Band

197 TUTOR: Brooks Williams

Sing and play country, folk, roots rock and acoustic music in a fun and supportive environment. This hands-on course samples an eclectic mix of songs from the likes of Dolly Parton, Gordon Lightfoot, Sandy Denny, Lindisfarne, Joan Baez, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and The Beatles, to name but a few. Bring your voice, bring your acoustic instrument and let's dive into a week of singing together. Suitable for all levels of singing experience - we will sing 'by ear.' It is helpful if the instrumentalists know the basic major and minor chords.

Course Notes

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
This course is for anyone who would like to sing and play with others.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE SESSIONS?
Our main focus will be singing. We'll learn the song and work on the melodies and harmonies. The instrumentalists will play the crucial supporting role of backing up the singers, which of course involves playing chords and keeping rhythm.

DO I NEED TO READ MUSIC?
No, the music will be taught by ear. Lyric and chord sheets will be provided.

WHAT KIND OF INSTRUMENTS WOULD BE APPROPRIATE
Pretty much anything acoustic but chordal instruments are crucial (guitar, mandolin, ukulele, banjo, etc). Given the nature of the music, harmonica, fiddle, bass, etc. are also very welcome!

MONDAY
The roots of folk. Classic folk & country songs that shaped the singer-songwriter boom of the 1960s/1970s

TUESDAY
A British Invasion. Songs from the UK.

WEDNESDAY
O Canada! Songs from the great North.

THURSDAY
Stars & Stripes. Here come the Americans.

FRIDAY
Bringing it all together.
