Whether
you need some inspiration for your home or are considering a career change into
the world of interiors, this fun and interactive course will guide you through
the fundamentals of interior design. By developing and curating your own ideas,
you will write your own brief, develop a concept, sketch furniture layouts and
put together a decorative design scheme from the extensive samples library.
Along with the work you have created and developed throughout the week, you
will take away a goody bag of tools to continue your design journey.
The half day week
long course will cover a series of topics that will give you a broad
understanding of the interior design process, along with specific hints and
tips on how to pull together a scheme, source for your project and implement
your design.
For this course you
will need to bring with you a pen, pencil, sharpener, eraser, ruler and
notebook. As an optional extra you may
like to bring with you some photos and basic dimensions of a room in your home
that you would like to focus on (ideally a living room, drawing room, family
room, dining room, playroom or bedroom). This is not a requirement as we have a fictional room template you can
work on should you prefer.
Day 1:
Either using the
room template provided, or a room in your own home as inspiration, you will
write your own detailed brief and develop a concept mood board for your design
using visual tools such as Pinterest and magazines.
Day 2:
Looking at how the
space will be used and who will use the space, we will dive in to the practical
elements of space planning, zoning and traffic flow and you will sketch out
your furniture plan. We will also
discuss the importance of good lighting and how to transform a room with the
right light.
Day 3:
Today we will look
at surface finishes, floor coverings, wall coverings and textiles that will
suit your space both practically and aesthetically, as well as how to source
sustainably.
Day 4:
Carrying over from
Day 3, you will continue to develop your decorative scheme, putting together
your scheme board using paints, wallpapers and textiles. We will also cover how to estimate quantities
of these.
Day 5:
Sourcing. Where to look for your furniture,
ironmongery, lighting and accessories to suit all budgets and tastes. How to layer your design with soft furnishings,
accessories and artwork. Then to round
off the week we will touch on some basic principles to consider for Kitchen and
Bathroom design.
After completing
the course, you will receive a goodie bag containing some tools to help you
continue on your design journey, including a sketchbook, paint charts, list of
suppliers, calendar of design events and a list of talented and trusted local
trades people that can help you implement your designs.
