289 TUTOR: Theo Phillips (Marlborough College)

 

This course is designed to build the confidence of students at a beginner/intermediate level. It is an interactive audio-visual course, with a native speaker, combining revision of the basics, exercises, conversation and cultural input. During the course, your tutor will take you on a journey through France using the French language and will focus on different aspects to develop your skills.

 

Course Notes

 

Every day you will receive vocabulary sheets including key words, common sentences and French anecdotes. You will learn French language but also French culture, through music, movies and exercises.

A tablet or smartphone is highly recommended and please bring a notebook and pens.

Day 1:

Icebreakers to encourage people to get to know each other and develop a team spirit. Revision of basics including introducing yourself and the difference between 'tu' and 'vous'. A quiz based on French culture.

 

Day 2:

Going to the restaurant: learning how to order food, asking for price...Work on asking for time and directions.

A quick focus on "I like/I don't like”.

Exercises to practise basics and casual conversations.

 

Day 3:

Travelling across France. Discover the city of Bordeaux through travel tips. In small groups organise your itinerary in the Sud-Ouest based on the rich material provided (discussion in small groups to determine date, time, price etc.). Each group will prepare and present a travel plan.

Day 4:

Organising a dinner party: cultural tips, questions to ask... You will imagine a menu and write an invitation letter.

Day 5:

A French film is at the centre of this session. Some selected scenes will give a basis for debate which should show-case your progress and your increased confidence in French.

About Theo

Theo works as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the French Department at the College, having graduated from Durham University in 2021 with a degree in Modern Languages and Cultures that included the award of a Distinction in Spoken French. He has lived and worked in Pau, in the South-West of France, teaching English in a professional setting, and has also spent time living in Beirut.
