Course Notes

The course begins by discussing the concept and meaning of 'place'. Place is a multifaceted concept that encompasses physical, social, cultural and psychological dimensions.

Places are a product of the interactions between people and their environment, shaped by history, culture, and individual experiences. Understanding the meaning of place requires considering both the tangible aspects of a location and the intangible, subjective elements that give it significance.

In 'Places of Wonder', we travel to and discuss significant, historic locations - all personal favourites of the tutor over his 35+ years of travel around the world.

During the course we will visit places as diverse as;

·the 'Lost Inca City' of Machu Picchu in Peru

·the stunning Nabataean architecture of Petra in Jordan

·Mayan Temples in Mexico

·the Ptolemaic Temple of Edfu in Egypt

·the standing stones of Callanish

·traditional Blackhouses in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland
