'Talking Stones' are physical rocks or stones imbued with cultural and symbolic qualities, found in various indigenous and traditional belief systems around the world.

In this course we will investigate Moai in Rapa Nui, petroglyphs in Jordan; carved stone reliefs in ancient Egypt; temple stones in India; Inca stones in Peru, C12th corbel stones church and Celtic and Pictish stones in the UK and gable stones in Amsterdam.

All these examples, will show how 'talking stones' represent a connection between the natural world, spirituality and human understanding. All the amazing stones and rocks featured have been visited, photographed and researched by the tutor. This course is a must for lovers of art, history and culture.

Course Notes

Over five sessions the tutor will investigate examples of Talking Stones around the world which span a staggering 10,000 years. These will include;

The Moai and Bird Man petroglyphs (rock carvings) in Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in Ecuador, South America

Neolithic petroglyphs from 10,200 BC, in the Wadi Rum, Jordan

Ancient Egyptian carved stone reliefs from the Temple at Edfu

The Qutb Mina, one of earliest, most prominent examples of Indo-Islamic architecture dating from the C12th, in Dehli, India

Inca and pre-Inca stones in Bolivia and Peru, South America

C12th Norman corbel stones at Kilpeck church, Herefordshire, UK

Celtic and Pictish stones in the UK

Decorative stonework from Al-Andalus (Moorish Spain) from the C8th

Gable stones (gevelstenen) on C17th houses in Amsterdam, Netherlands

All these examples and more, will show how 'talking stones' represent a connection between the natural world, spirituality and human understanding throughout history.

This is a richly illustrated course. All the amazing stones, rocks and decorative works featured have been visited, photographed and researched by the tutor during his 35+ years of world travel. Key information slides used will be made available to students after the course.

Students are advised to bring note-taking materials during the sessions, which are all classroom based.

This course is a must for lovers of art, history and culture.

About Brian

Photographer, architect, educator and adventurer based in Wirral, Merseyside. Brian has over 30 years' experience capturing travel, landscape and wildlife images from 55+ countries and territories on 4 continents, and even further afield to wilderness regions including Galápagos, the geographic North Pole, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and the Antarctic peninsula. Brian has been presenting illustrated talks on his trips since 1998. He runs courses on Photography and lectures to schools, adult colleges & universities on a range of topics and themes. His images and articles appear regularly in brochures, foreign websites and in UK photographic journals. Brian has also been running courses and presenting lectures at Marlborough College Summer School since 2015.
