Iyengar Yoga

231 TUTOR: Sylvie Corruble

Iyengar Yoga focusses on structural alignment while developing strength, flexibility and balance. It incorporates the use of props, such as straps, bricks and bolsters, to help you work with any limitations and make some poses more accessible, relieving any pain and discomfort. This course is suitable for beginners as well as regular yoga students who wish to deepen their practice. Everyone will have the opportunity to discover a posture or experience a more challenging version of it. The course includes asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing) and savasana (relaxation).

Course Notes

1. What to wear

Wear comfortable clothing, preferably cotton. You just need loose or stretchable clothing such as shorts, tights, leggings, leotards, etc…

Yoga is practised bare feet

2. What to bring

Iyengar yoga uses props (straps, blocks, bolsters, blankets…). If you do not have any of the following props, be creative and improvise. For instance a scarf can replace a strap, folded blankets (providing they are firm) or cushions make excellent substitutes for a bolster. We will use different props according to your body structure and requirements.

  • a yoga mat (make sure that it is non-slip)
  • warm clothes for relaxation (socks, sweatshirt…)
  • 2 small blankets to use in some postures and another blanket for relaxation
  • 4 blocks
  • a strap
  • a bolster

Marlborough Summer School will be able to provide you with mats, blocks and straps if you do not have any.

3. Practice

  • Previous experience is not essential
  • Instruction in Iyengar Yoga includes postures, breathing, concentration, relaxation. Postures are either static (a position is taken up by the body and held) or dynamic (movement exercises). Each movement is synchronized with breathing.
  • Breathing should be continuous and not forced
  • Do not compete with yourself or anybody else
  • Listen to your body: be aware of your daily changes in abilities
  • Try to do your best but DO NOT STRAIN
  • At the end of each session there will be a period of total relaxation

Please complete this form and return it to Marlborough Summer School or to sylvie.corruble@gmail.com, before the end of June.
