Oil Painting Inspired by Venice: Painting Sparkling Light and Suggested Detail

29 TUTOR: Paul Minter (BA Hons PGCE)

Venice has been the inspiration for many visiting and native artists. Canaletto, Turner, Monet, Siket, Sargent and Seago to name just a few. They were captivated by the architecture and most importantly by the light of Venice. The tutor will show you how to use oil paints, assuming that you have had limited previous experience, and perhaps never painted in oils. We will make oil studies from the work of great painters, to explore their techniques. Step by step I will show you how it is done, and share with you my enthusiasm for painting Venice. All materials provided.

Course Notes

This course is suitable for painters of all abilities, including those who have never painted in oils before. I will show you different ways of painting architectural subjects, often using implied detail rather than careful drawing. We will also look at glittering sunlight and how to paint water reflecting light.

We will make studies of works by famous artists. It is amazing how many artists worked in Venice.

Monet, Turner, Sickert, Seago, and obviously the great Venetian painters Canaletto and Guardi. They approached the subject in different ways to achieve different types of paintings. I will suggest works for you that match your abilities but that also push you a little. The emphasis is on having fun and working a little outside the comfort zone.

Do not worry if you can't draw. I will show you how to use tracing and projections to help. There is a lot of evidence, for example, that Canaletto used a camera obscura to make projected images.

All materials and equipment will be provided but if you could provide a couple of empty jam jars with their lids that would be helpful. Wear an apron and/or old clothes as oil paint does tend to spread especially onto sleeves.

Please bring a re-fillable water bottle as the studio does get hot and you will need to stay hydrated. I discourage cups and glasses in the workplace as it is easy to dip your brushes into these by mistake.
