A raffia bag is a great accompaniment to any beach holiday, cruise or an evening out for a cocktail. With this workshop, you have the chance to make your own raffia bag. There are a range of options from which to choose, including different handle styles and you may decorate your bag as you wish. Raffia is a beautiful, flexible, durable and sustainable material and the bag you make will remain stunning and usable for many years to come. Course Notes

The days will include:

-An introduction to raffia

-Dyeing techniques (provided in notes also) - note that students will work with natural raffia in the workshop

-Plaiting technique - right- and left-hand versions taught - plus keeping the plait going for the necessary time - a bag (size dependent) could be in excess of 10m in plait length

-Sewing technique, using raffia to sew with

-Finish the design options - the differences

-1:1 tuition as well as group guidance as appropriate

-Group display of finished items

Techniques involved:

-Plaiting

-Sewing

The intention is always to have an enjoyable day but also create a beautiful functional item.

Note: complete beginners welcome, no prior experience/skills required, no prior reading or recommended reading is included for this workshop

Materials provided will be:

Notes on how to complete different bag styles - including information on how raffia can be dyed

Raffia sufficient to complete a medium sized bag

Raffia for sewing

Variety of handle options

Needle

Pegs for plaiting

Students to bring:

Comfortable scissors

Thimble (if used)

More raffia, available in 500g bags or 1k hanks

Handles available to purchase for additional bags

About Claire

Claire has been teaching raffia craft for over 25 years, learning her skills from an Australian in 1993. Claire lives in Dorset but travels across the UK attending events and running workshops where she hopes she passes on her enthusiasm for raffia, whilst also having fun. Claire has had a varied career in NHS and education, where she taught under-graduate students basic accounts......she prefers working with raffia.
