Nothing feels more like summer than raffia. With this workshop, you have the chance to make your own natural raffia hat, in your size, finished as you wish and from a range of three styles. Raffia is a beautiful, flexible, durable and sustainable material and the hat you make will remain usable for many years to come. Join this workshop to make your own stunning, unique summer hat and you will always be heatwave ready.

Course Notes

 

Hats are available for students to 'interrogate' and learn from. All students will receive personal notes on each of the techniques - and be encouraged to annotate/add to these notes throughout the day. The days will include:

·An introduction to raffia

·Dyeing techniques (provided in notes also) - note that students will work with natural raffia in the workshop

·Plaiting technique - right- and left-hand versions taught - plus keeping the plait going for the necessary time - a hat is approx. 8m in plait length

·Sewing technique, using raffia to sew with

·Finish the design options - the differences

·Steaming the hats

·Storage and care of the hats

·1:1 tuition as well as group guidance as appropriate

·Group display of finished items

Techniques involved:

·Plaiting

·Sewing

The intention is always to have an enjoyable day but also create a beautiful functional item.

Note: complete beginners welcome, no prior experience/skills required, no prior reading or recommended reading is included for this workshop

Materials provided will be:

·Notes on how to complete the three hat styles - including information on how raffia can be dyed

·Raffia sufficient to complete a hat

·Raffia for sewing, plus to provide a raffia decorative trim

·Needle

·Pegs for plaiting

·Use of hat block in specific size

 

Students to bring:

·Comfortable scissors

·Thimble (if used)

 

Available to buy:

·More raffia, available in 500g bags or 1k hanks

·Hat blocks can be purchase from the tutor if wanted

About Claire

Claire has been teaching raffia craft for over 25 years, learning her skills from an Australian in 1993. Claire lives in Dorset but travels across the UK attending events and running workshops where she hopes she passes on her enthusiasm for raffia, whilst also having fun. Claire has had a varied career in NHS and education, where she taught under-graduate students basic accounts......she prefers working with raffia.
