Travel Sketching: Next Steps

102 TUTOR: Kevin Scully

This course is perfect if you've sketched before. If you are keen to take the foundations you've learned a little further, we can now explore a wider range of subjects. Based on our earlier classes where we observe shape and plan our sketches ahead, we will look at subjects including interiors and exteriors, café sketching and people, street scenes and local architecture. The focus of this course will be firmly on fun and enjoying your personal creative expression. All materials will be provided.

Course Notes

The first day in the studio will be an introduction to your sketching kit and you will be shown examples of the tutor's own sketchbooks and the kind of things he fills them with. A sketchbook is a personal thing, and the choice is ultimately yours regarding how you use it.

We will begin by sketching some still life objects, some of which will be provided by the tutor but please bring along some of your own. These could be a small selection of your favourite items from around the house: perhaps a favourite vase with a few flowers, a bowl, a memento from your travels, in fact anything that you would like to sketch.

We will begin by sketching in ink and then we will look at ways of adding colour. Rather than just creating a drawing, consider how you can experiment with different ways to fill the space on the page. The page itself can have a strong design element, which further enhances the sketches. Later in the week you can add notes to your sketches if you wish, and we will examine the kinds of lettering that will complement your sketches.

Part of the week will be spent sketching on location in and around the College and in Marlborough itself. There are many inspiring buildings, shops, and cafes just a few minutes from the studio where we can find inspiration for sketching a wonderful range of subject matter both inside and out.

You will be travelling light with just the minimum of art materials. You won't be aiming for realism: it's impossible in the time available, so the objective is to be creative. You don't have to draw everything you see: you can focus in on details and you're also allowed to leave things out.

In your sketchbook the choice is yours!

At the end of the week you will have acquired a range of skills and techniques to provide you with the necessary confidence to begin sketching when you venture out on your travels.
