Melanie Cambridge has been a regular tutor at Marlborough College Summer School for the past five years, specialising in oil painting, particularly painting "fast and loose” both outside on location and in the studio. Her oil courses include paints, brushes and mediums so you can come along and try oil painting without any extra upfront expense on materials. This year sees the return of her seascape painting week. Yes, we realise we are some miles from the sea at Marlborough, so Melanie will bring the sea to you, in the form of video clips, photos and inspirational paintings. This course also offers you the opportunity to work on a larger scale as it is entirely based in the studio, so if you fancy doing a 3ft wide oil painting - here's your chance.
CAN ANYONE REALLY LEARN TO PAINT?
The simple answer is of course you can! Everyone has an ability to enjoy colour and make marks. Yes, you do need some basic skills such as mixing colours and understanding how to compose a view (you do this each time you take a photograph). Melanie specialises in teaching with oil colour where you will learn not only how to handle paint, mix colour and create a successful composition, but also takes time to help everyone to develop their own style and achieve their personal best.
I HAVE BEEN PAINTING FOR SOME TIME, WILL I STILL LEARN NEW SKILLS?
Yes. Groups are limited to ten students, meaning there is time for plenty of one to one tuition as well as structured group lessons.
WILL WE BE PAINTING OUTSIDE?
Yes, particularly for "Oils, Fast and Loose”, which has painting from life at the heart of the course. There will be opportunities for outdoor sketching and painting within the College grounds on other courses, weather permitting.
ARE THERE ANY STRONG FUMES WITH OIL PAINT?
Not on these courses as Melanie uses her own low odour brush cleaner and an alkyd medium which has very little smell.
I HAVE HEARD OIL PAINT TAKES A LONG TIME TO DRY.
Whilst oil paint can take a week or more to dry the colours on these courses are exclusive to Melanie Cambridge and usually take around two days to dry. This year, Melanie has a special "drying medium” you can mix into colours on the palette so that they will dry overnight enabling you to take home finished, touch-dry paintings at the end of the course.
